  ASSESSMENT AND MONITORING OF THE FISHERY RESOURCES AND THE ECOSYSTEMS IN THE STRAITS OF SICILY  
   
 

MedSudMed "Assessment and Monitoring of the Fishery Resources and the Ecosystems in the Straits of Sicily" is a regional project with four participating countries (Italy, Libya, Malta and Tunisia), executed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and funded by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies (MiPAAF). The Project aims to support scientific communities and countries in the development of a monitoring system for the studies of fisheries resources and ecosystems. The main objectives of the Project are to increase the scientific knowledge on the ecosystems of the project area, strengthen national and regional expertise, develop scientific cooperation in order to promote the standardization of the methodologies used in fisheries research. .. ... +MORE

Ad hoc meeting on closed seasons for fisheries.

An ad hoc meeting on closed seasons for fisheries will be held in Salammbô, Tunisia on 15th and 16th February 2012. The meeting will be kindly hosted by the INSTM (Institut National des Sciences set Technologies de la Mer). The aim of the meeting is to discuss the case study of the Gulf of Gabès with a view to the future harmonization of closed seasons for fisheries in the MedSudMed Project area. The current fishing operations taking place in the national and international waters of the area will be described, especially in terms of seasonality, and management tools affecting the fisheries will be discussed. The output of the meeting will be a road map for future activities addressing this issue. Experts from the MedSudMed area will participate and the Meeting is open to other interested parties from the Mediterranean scientific community.

Maps resulting from oceanographic modelling at sub-regional scale were generated for salinity, temperature and currents at different depths, as they provide an overview of the oceanographic characteristics of the area.
