ASSESSMENT AND MONITORING OF THE FISHERY RESOURCES AND THE ECOSYSTEMS IN THE STRAITS OF SICILY

MedSudMed "Assessment and Monitoring of the Fishery Resources and the Ecosystems in the Straits of Sicily" is a regional project with four participating countries (Italy, Libya, Malta and Tunisia), executed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and funded by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies (MiPAAF). The Project aims to support scientific communities and countries in the development of a monitoring system for the studies of fisheries resources and ecosystems. The main objectives of the Project are to increase the scientific knowledge on the ecosystems of the project area, strengthen national and regional expertise, develop scientific cooperation in order to promote the standardization of the methodologies used in fisheries research. .. ... +MORE

Working Group on Small Pelagic Fishery Resources in the South-Central Mediterranean Sea.

Preliminary Annoted Agenda (pdf)
The Working Group meeting was held in the framework of the MedSudMed Project activities on Small Pelagic fishery species and the cooperative work carried out to date was recalled at the beginning of the meeting. The participating experts presented the relevant national research and monitoring activities as well as the available data held in each country on small pelagic resources. The current protocols for national acoustic surveys and data processing were described and an update was given on the MEDIAS protocol.
The feasibility of an inter-calibration exercise at sea for acoustic surveys in the Project area was discussed. The WG also analysed the possibility to finalise a genetic comparison of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) samples in the MedSudMed area for the identification of stock units of this species. The meeting was attended by the designated experts from the countries participating in the MedSudMed Project.
